Car and Driver editorial integrity - or - how much was Csaba paid by GM?

Csaba CsereWhile I have to say I rather enjoyed Csaba Csere’s steering column in the September Car and Driver, I would have rather it been labeled as the advertisement it is.

The talk of GM’s past technological achievments is great, but patting the General on the back for a product that hasn’t come to market yet (and which the engineers say will not achieve its stated targets of range and price) is taking it a bit far.

Even this could be understood if Csere had the basic facts right.  But he doesn’t:

To make it work, GM will have to perfect not only the first serial hybrid powertrain ever brought to market, but the corporation will need to also develop, thoroughly test, and figure out how to build the largest lithium-ion battery pack ever to see mass production. (emphasis mine)

GM has stated several times that one of the keys to delivering the Volt on time will be selecting the best vendor for the battery pack.  GM isn’t going to develop or build that pack, they’re going to buy it.
