After a whirlwind trip from Georgia to Pennsylvania to pick up a thouroughly wrecked 1997 Audi A4 parts car to replace the engine in my ‘98, I finally managed to get it back together (with a lot of […]
It’s road trip time!
Thursday, May 15th, 2008 That’s right. Another adventure awaits.
A few weeks ago, my wife’s ‘98 Audi A4 gave up the ghost. The oil supply line for the turbo blew off and pumped all of the oil out of the engine.
Ebay to the rescue. I found a wrecked ‘97 that still had a good engine. It’s in Penssylvania and […]
More G-Tech-y goodness
Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 Well, I finally got around to doing some testing on my wife’s Audi.
If you recall, I recently replaced the (well worn) turbocharger on it, and amazingly enough, I had the foresight to take 0-60 mph measurements both before and after.
New, the car would do 0-60 in 8.1 seconds.
With the worn out turbo, the car […]
Turbo replacement update
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 Well, the turbocharger replacement on my wife’s Audi is finished. I had to make a new oil supply hose using the fittings from the original, but it seems to be holding up just fine.
The replacement turbo ($240 from Ebay) works fine. The car feels stronger now with ~200,000 miles on it than it did […]
Turbo replacement
Wednesday, November 21st, 2007Work on the Audi continues. This past weekend A friend and I started working on replacing the turbocharger on my wife’s 1998 Audi A4. The car had gotten progressively louder and slower over the last few months, and I could no longer hear the turbocharger spool up like I used to. I was unprepared […]
Sealed for Life - part two
Sunday, November 11th, 2007A while back I wrote about sealed-for-life bearings. Briefly, bearings that can be regreased will last forever with proper care, but will fail in about 25,000 miles or so without being regreased. Note that this 25,000 mile figure is significantly less that most new car warranties.
Sealed bearings will usually last 100,000 miles or […]
The new sound of cool
Sunday, October 1st, 2006I went to Road Atlanta yesterday to see the Petit Lemans. What struck me the most about the cars racing there was the completely different sound of their engines. From the shriek of the rotary Mazda to the guttural growl of the Corvettes, each car was easily identifiable with your eyes closed.
Except the […]
Sealed for life
Friday, August 11th, 2006How long does the average American who purchases a new car expect it to last before it needs major service?
100,000 miles? 150,000 miles?
I would be seriously upset if any NEW car that I purchased ended up in the shop with less than 100k on the clock.
